Summary

Billy Cobham began his recording sessions in March of

1981 for the London produced album Stratus with a short solo. Otherwise

he allowed his newly formed band, Glassmenagerie, the liberty to evolve

freely between the nonchalance of Rock and the grooviness of Jazz.

Billy Cobham, who had perfected his techniques to the

point that they maintained their effect even in the smallest nuances,

surrendered himself entirely to the relaxed playing style which was revealed in

a stylistically open manner on tracks such as the one composed by the skilled

pianist and sound specialist Gil Goldstein. “Drum Solo,” a study which

demonstrated Cobham’s drumming genius on double bass drum, cymbals and

snare, must surely suffice for drum enthusiasts. Apart from that there are

filigree interactions between Cobham and bassist Tim Landers, or

the sensitive guitarist Mike Stern, who shines with technical brilliance

in his piece called “Brooze.”

Stratus arouses a new passion for the fusion music

developed by Cobham and others in the 1970’s. Next to Mike Stern,

who has proven himself as an excellent jazz-rocker, Tim Landers, who

joined up with Billy Cobham for the 80’s tour, and stylistically

undefined Gil Goldstein, the musical cast is completed by the Polish

violinist and lyricon player Michal Urbaniak. With his innovative violin

sound, enhanced through the use of electronic effects, he delivers his most

striking performance on the album in his piece “Kasia.”

Possibly the best track from this excellent work, in terms of

technical expertise and sensory perception, is Cobham’s own composition

“AC/DC”, in which he competently transfers his Latin American technique onto his

American drum set. For Cobham fans, Stratus truly is an

essential album in the comprehensive work of a trend-setting jazz-rock drummer.
